The intricately carved façade of Howsham Hall makes for a stunning wedding photography backdrop in any light, from your whole wedding party, drone shots, family and groups, and you as a couple – you’ll only want to return again for sunset, twilight, flash light and champagne sprays!
You’ve probably come across this because you’re either researching a North Yorkshire wedding or have already decided upon a booking at Howsham Hall. And if so, I commend you on your good taste! If you’re just beginning to search for inspiration, take a tour of my images here for wedding photography ideas…
If, like me, you love a country house, what better way to imagine you’re surveying your estate with whiskey in hand, than by hiring it out for exclusive use, perhaps over two nights, for your wedding? Bliss.
Howsham Hall is part of the Dine network of wedding venues that includes Rise Hall, near Beverley, and The Mansion at Roundhay, Leeds, as well as the Sefton Park Palm House, Liverpool and Walled Garden at Helperby, North Yorkshire. For my article on Rise Hall, click here.
Howsham is a Grade I listed Jacobean manor sitting on 80 acres of grounds on the banks of the Derwent, 12 miles northeast of York.
Upon entry, the Great Hall to the right will be the setting for your ceremony, neutrally decorated to compliment any floral arrangement. The opportunities for opulent and elegant wedding photography are endless.
To the left, the Drawing Room will host your wedding breakfast, of up to 96 guests, whereafter evening reception capacity expands to 150, unless opted for a marquee in the grounds, accommodating up to 250.
Howsham Hall’s wedding suite spans the entire width of the manor’s frontage, one of the largest in Europe, with beautiful warm bays for wedding photographs of preparation, a huge lounge, elegant bathroom, dressing room, bridal bedroom and more. You can then descend the ‘house stairs’ for discretion, before emerging into the Great Hall to walk down the aisle with impact.
Drinks reception can be held in the staircase hall or beyond into the grounds, the rear terrace, the billiard room and newly renovated evening space between the courtyard and terrace, complete with bar and dancefloor.
Besides the bridal suite, a further 11 rooms are available for guest with no sense of diminished grandeur. Each is unique. The Howard Suite features a four poster, freestanding bath and dressing room, whilst the Kirkham also features and four-poster bed and bathtub. The Nunnington provides a double and shower.
On a further floor, the Slingsby features and super king-size and bath, the Hovingham a double and shower, and the Newburgh, a uniquely tranquil wood-panelled room with sculpture, king-size bed and freestanding bath.
Rooms around to courtyard, and closer to the evening party action, include the Helmsley suite, with a double bed and adjoining room with twins – decorating to ‘40s/’50s Hollywood noir photography and featuring a games table – this might be the optimal spot for the groom’s party the night before, heading down the to bunker-like billiard room that was formally the manor’s kitchen. Beside the Welburn and Derwent double rooms, those looking to stay with family and children might opt for the Malton and Derwent rooms, with double/twins combined.
