Historic records date a ‘Manor Wortley’ on the site between the 1100s – 1440s, but the current Wortley Hall was built by the then Sir Wortley, Earl of Wharncliffe in 1586. A Loyalist who commanded a Garrison in the nearby Battle of Tankersley Moor, captured by the Roundheads and imprisoned in the Tower of London.

Wortley Hall lies on the A61 between Sheffield and Barnsley.

Renovations were commissioned in 1800, whilst some wings came to be occupied by the army in WWII, when further disrepair led to ownership by a combination of the Co-operative and various trade unions – still the case today.

Sitting in 26 acres (11 of which are formal east-facing gardens, making for beautiful side and back-lit wedding photographs during ceremony and afternoon drinks) ceremony options in the grounds can include tradition choices with the backdrop of the façade of the hall and formal fountains, or a festival-like woodland setting. No end of options for wedding photography of many styles. And again in the evening, for off-camera flash portraits or wedding photography casting colour on the hall behind the two of you.

The Lounge (here set for a ceremony by Those Cherished Moments) accommodates up to 130 guests, with French doors leading onto the terrace.

Next door, the Sylvia Pankhurst Library offers a space for up to 50.

The Foundry Dining Room (here set for wedding breakfast by Those Cherished Moments) can serve up to 150 guests, with oak panelling, and a stunning Italianate and stained glass ceiling.

The Unite Ballroom (and outdoor settings) can accommodate up to 200.

Wortley Hall offers 55 individually decorated bedrooms (advance purchase rates available in conjunction with weddings) and 3 self-catering cottages on site.
