Coming down the driveway at Holdsworth House, you’d be forgiven for missing it, tucked away around the corner.  Grand, yet cosy and intimate at the same time, Holdsworth House has a much-storied history.

There is evidence of a Medieval building on the site dating from 1272, though the present Grade II Listed Jacobean manor dates from 1633, featuring beamed ceilings and stone mullioned windows that evoke the Tudor and Elizabethan era just a couple of decades prior.

Since 1633 it has always been in private ownership and was bought in 1962 by the Pearsons, Freddie and Rita, who opened The Cavalier Country Club there in 1963.  When accommodation began being offered the following year, Freddie’s connections with London meant some of the first guests were none other than The Beatles.  Holdsworth was passed down to Gail and Kim Pearson in the ‘80s and continues to be run by a third generation of the family, now with 32 hotel rooms and several function rooms.  Restoration of the stone gazebo in the ’90s was secured through National Lottery funding, and in 2020, over the pandemic, traditional techniques were used to restore the slate roof of the Stuart Room. Holdsworth had often been used for filming.

Having parked, you enter the hotel through what is the rear of the original manor, so there is a sense of this historic building just keeping on giving, with more and more to reveal as you progress.

Is Holdsworth House Licensed for Legal Wedding Ceremonies?

Yes - Holdsworth House uses the Calderdale Register Office for its legal wedding ceremonies, both outdoor and in. You need to book the registrar directly with the Calderdale Register Office, Huddersfield Road, Halifax, to perform the legal marriage service at the hotel. You will book Holdsworth House for your reception and ceremony, and then book the registrar separately for the legal part of the marriage. How many guests can Holdsworth House Accommodate?

Up to 120 for ceremonies, depending upon the space chosen and 150 for evening reception.

I'd Like an Outdoor Ceremony, But What if it Rains?

An outdoor ceremony can be held on the lawn, but need cause no anxiety - if the weather doesn't allow, a room is on reserve inside. Kylie and Richard's June wedding was set for the lawn but sadly rain came down just in the window of time the ceremony was set for, leaving this and group shots inside, but to no impact...and we made it outside later in the evening!

What about Accommodation?

The hotel offers 33 bedrooms: your guests receive a preferential room rate when quoting your names.

Is Holdsworth House Offered for Exclusive Use During Our Wedding?

This is a cost option at Holdsworth House, with your dedicated personal co-ordinator Claire or Ruby.

Fridays to Sundays:

Fewer than 100 day and 120 evening guests: £9,000

100 day and 120 evening guests or more: £7,000

Mondays to Thursdays:

Minimum 60 day and 80 evening guests: £8,500

Couples can opt for two photographers – a second photographer is important if you want to cover more candid photos of friends during afternoon and evening receptions, when I am occupied with portraits elsewhere, and if you want to cover both of your preparations ahead of the ceremony
